Texas

We enjoyed our time in Texas more than we anticipated. Honestly, we were interested in seeing a bit but kind of keeping a quick pace to conquer the massive state (it takes FOREVER to drive across).

Below are the things we saw, did, and a little bit of everyday life photos sprinkled in the mix:

📍Katy, Texas

Our first night, we stopped in Katy, Texas (just outside of Houston) at a Harvest Host location, a prayer park.

📍We visited our first Buc-ee's

The next morning we got up and finished our drive to Lakehills (outside of San Antonio).

📍The Alamo
We walked through The Alamo Church which was originally established as a mission, but then later became a military stronghold for Texas independence. While there we heard the sounds of a musket firing demonstration.

📍San Antonio Riverwalk
The riverwalk was stunning! We enjoyed walking along the waterway and stopped for a delicious tex-mex lunch.

📍Historic Market Square
We had hoped to visit the Centro De Artes Gallery, but were closed, so decided to walk through the Historic Market Square, right next to the museum. We enjoyed walking the largest Mexican market in the U.S. As we strolled through the three-block outdoor plaza, both boys decided they needed cowboy hats. True kept exclaiming, "YEE HAW!"

Valor and True met a bunch of other kids at the park we stayed at, and they spent hours upon hours working on an extensive outdoor fort, complete with a bone graveyard and a lookout platform.

📍Mission San José
At this mission we went on a Ranger-led tour that was incredibly fascinating and we learned a ton. Here Valor had the opportunity to be the first person to trial-run their new draft version of their Junior Ranger booklet. He earned a badge for a National Historical Park, a World Heritage Site, and a patch for Discover Hispanic Heritage. Valor's favorite part of this mission was learning about the grist mill and how it functioned.

📍Viva Vegeria
I would be amiss to not share about this amazing vegan and gluten-free Tex-Mex restaurant we ate at!

📍San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden
This rock quarry turned Japanese Tea Garden was stunning! We happened to go on a grey and slightly drizzly day, but would love to see this place in full bloom.

While in TX, I cooked my own tex-mex — vegan stuffed poblano peppers.

There were tons of deer at the park we stayed at. They were friendly, were often just outside our door and the boys got to feed them right from their hands! Our stay in Lakehills, TX ended in freezing temperatures and ice.

📍Fort, Stockton, Texas
For our last night in Texas, we stayed at another Harvest Host location and spent the evening hanging out with two other couples around a fire who were stopped there for the night as well. It got below freezing that night and our RV battery was dead, so were saved by our new friends as they let us plug in to their rig, and we were able to run our heater through the night.

📍Sierra Blanca Tee Pees
These tee pees were just a fun roadside rest stop with fabulous views, while we were heading West on I-10.
